(NHI) National Health Insurance for International Students

Laws and regulations

According to National Health Insurance (NHI.) Anyone who holds a residence permit document and has lived in Taiwan for more than 6 months should participate in national health insurance.
*Residency in Taiwan for 6 months refers to the actual residence period of 6 consecutive months or 1 departure of less than 30 days after entering the Taiwan area and obtaining an alien residence permit, after deducting the number of days of departure, and then counting up to 6 months.

 


Insurance premium payment method and amount

International students’ National Health Insurance (NHI) premiums are included in the semester tuition bill and paid upon registration.

The monthly premium is NT$826. Students pay NT$4,956 per semester (Sept–Feb for the first semester; Mar–Aug for the second semester).

Students who refuse to enroll may be fined NT$3,000–NT$15,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in no NHI coverage, even if premiums are paid later (per Article 88 of the National Health Insurance Act).

 


Application Procedure

Please send an email from your NTUST student email account (studentID@mail.ntust.edu.tw) to oia@mail.ntust.edu.tw with the subject line:“Apply for NHI Card _ Student ID + Name

Kindly attach the following documents:

  • A copy of the front and back of the Alien Residence Permit (ARC).
  • Personal photo (same format as photo on ARC)
  • Receipt for payment of tuition fees (showing NHI fees paid)

(1) The Office of International Affairs will assist you with your application to submit to the National Health Insurance System. It takes about 7-10 business days to receive your NHI card.

(2) The Office of International Affairs (OIA) will notify you by email once your NHI card is ready. Please collect your card during OIA office hours.

(3) If any information on your NHI card is incorrect (e.g., name, ARC number, or date of birth), please bring your NHI card and supporting documents to the Office of International Affairs (OIA).

 


I would like to change my NHI insurance unit to the school

Please follow the steps below:

(1) Apply for an NHI transfer at your current insured unit (e.g., company or local office).

(2) Obtain the transfer form.

(3) Submit the form to the Office of International Affairs (OIA).

 


Insured through another unit; not transferring to the school

Please inform the OIA health insurance coordinator before paying your tuition each semester to avoid duplicate payments.

 


Comprehensive Benefits and Convenient Access

Under the National Health Insurance, medical services include outpatient and inpatient care, traditional Chinese medicine, dental treatment, childbirth, rehabilitation, home care, and chronic mental illness support, among others.

 


NHI Transfer or Withdrawal from the School

(1) Students on leave, who have withdrawn, or graduated

Please visit the Office of International Affairs (OIA) to apply for a refund and to surrender or transfer your health insurance.

(2) Transferring NHI from Our School to Another School

Visit the OIA for health insurance refunds or transfers, and bring the school-issued transfer form to your new school to complete the process.

(3) Students working off-campus who need to transfer to their company’s health insurance

The employing company will contact the office to handle the transfer, and the student must notify the office to transfer the health insurance back when resigning, and the student is requested to bring the transfer form to the office.

(4) Spouses and children who must rely on the student to insured

The student should apply in person and bring the school transfer form and the relative's residence permit to the National Health Insurance Bureau in person.

 


Reissue or replace the health insurance IC card

If you apply for a replacement of your health insurance IC card due to identity information change, damage, loss, photo replacement, etc., please go to National Health Insurance Administration or the Post Office to pay the cost of NT$200 and the application form.

(1) National Health Insurance Administration – In-Person Application

Visit a service center in your district to apply. If you cannot collect your card the same day, contact the center by email or in person to check the collection time.

(2) Post office collection

Apply at a post office; the NHI card will arrive at your designated address in 5–7 working days.
